Meet the hearts behind the mission

Originally from Ireland, Joe & Oonagh moved to New York in 2012, bringing along their much-loved dogs including their first, Sammy. With their love for animals and dogs in particular, over their years here they began to take in rescues, specifically senior and/or disabled dogs.

Their hearts broke when they lost Sammy. While reminiscing about Sammy and thinking back on the care, treatment, and nutrition it took to keep him happy and healthy, it wasn’t long before they realized that what they do is not only an important cause, but something they loved and were passionate about. Looking at their beloved group of rescues, they knew they wanted to continue to make a difference and keep building on their passion project.

Fast forward to 2022, Joe & Oonagh took the all-important step in making Sammy’s Senior Sanctuary official. With 17 ‘crew members and counting, they continue to provide shelter and care for sick and/or abandoned senior dogs in need.

Together as a team, Joe & Oonagh do everything for the sanctuary. It can be quite a challenge to keep a dog sanctuary stocked with food, treats and other supplies. Their furry residents also require constant medication and supplements, regular grooming, wellness visits to the vet, dental care, and emergency treatment to name just some. It’s safe to say they have a lot on their plate.
